From Ed Gandia:

I firmly believe we live in a world of infinite abundance.

Yet that’s an easy thing to forget, especially when we’re bombarded every day with the opposite message.

And if you’re not careful, you can start approaching your life and business with a fear and scarcity mentality.

In today’s episode, I’m joined by my good friend, teacher and coach, Peleg Top. Peleg has been my teacher and coach on and off for the past 11 years. He’s an incredible human and one of my favorite people to chat with.

This conversation is a little different from most of my other episodes. For one, we ease into the discussion rather than jump right in. Peleg and I always have interesting conversations when it’s just the two of us, and I wanted this episode to be very much like one of these private discussions we often have.

It’s also different because we discuss an issue that’s not as concrete as many of the topics we cover in this podcast—abundance.

Approach this episode with an open mind and heart. If you do, I think you’ll get a lot out of it.

How do you define abundance?

The dictionary defines abundance as a very large quantity of something.

We need to remind ourselves that we’re already abundant. It’s just a question of what we’re abundant in.

When you have limiting beliefs about what abundance can be, you close the door to other forms of abundance that can come in your life.

Ultimately, abundance is the ability to do what you need to do when you need to do it.

So why insist on the form that abundance must take?

Can you give us an example?

He believed that to be a successful artist, he needed to sell paintings, have them in galleries, etc.

He wasn’t doing that, so he started to think maybe he wasn’t good enough.

Then a friend saw a piece Peleg was working on and asked to buy it.

In that moment, Peleg realized that what he wanted to happen was actually happening—just in a different form, from an unexpected source

And as long as he practices—and doesn’t come from a place of need, neediness and scarcity—his art will get out into the world.

Getting attached to specific outcomes holds us back. It stops us from being creative.

Talk to me about this idea of not obsessing over outcome

We can come from a place of fear or from love. It’s our choice.

When we’re fear-driven, our mindset is scarcity.

When we come from love, it’s a whole different experience.

We trust that we’ll be taken care of. We trust that things will work out for us. So we let go of some of that control and allow things to happen.

That’s when creativity starts to blossom.

Does that mean that we shouldn’t set goals?

Having goals is important, but it’s not really about meeting those goals.

What a goal DOES is more important than what the goal IS.

Goals motivate us into action.

We may never reach those goals. But they act as a compass to keep us moving in the right direction for a satisfying life.

What about elite Olympic athletes who’re obsessed with winning gold or breaking a record?

You have to start by asking why. Why is that goal important to them?

Is the goal driven by low self-esteem or insecurities? Do they feel the need to prove themselves to the world?

Sometimes, the journey to reaching that goal is the more important experience.

The path to reaching that goal can feel very different, depending on where they’re coming from.

What’s the relationship between being future-oriented and anxiety?

Future orientation is a cause of anxiety, absolutely.

We live in an anxious world, with wars, pandemics, and climate change. We get messages from the media every day that it’s all doom and gloom.

We have to choose what we want to bring into our lives so that our day-to-day experience isn’t anxiety-ridden.

Yes, bad stuff is going to always happen.

But are bad things happening to you right now, at this exact moment?

What are some practical things we can do to stay present and in abundance?

Practicing gratitude by keeping a gratitude journal is a wonderful place to start.

But practicing gratitude is much more than that. It’s walking through the world with the eyes of gratitude and love.

A lot of it has to do with how you express yourself in life.

Do you complain all the time and feed the fear?

You can choose to express yourself differently and create your world versus reacting to everything around you.

How can we start this process?

Try this exercise: sit in front of the mirror for one minute and look at yourself.

It sounds simple, but it’s a challenging exercise for many.

When we look in the mirror, we immediately begin to judge ourselves.

But we can slow down and start to explore our own inner world. Why am I feeling this way about myself? Why am I so judgmental? Why is it so hard for me to love myself?
